This is the first of my published thoughts regarding art making and its inherent creative process, along with ideas generated by readings prompted by a recent foray into philosophy of aesthetics and visual studies. As with any new endeavor, it is challenging to know even where to begin, so I chose this image, Witness, as an opening.

The camera, its recording capabilities, the child’s innocence, hidden behind the lens, all speak of a lifelong wish to record, retain and relive moments in time. This image is part of a larger body of work, some of which is currently being exhibited at Susan Maasch Fine Art in Portland, Maine.

I made this work in an effort to capture the affective arena of existence, namely the patterns that are established in us early in our lives. The journey begins with deep seated mining into the origins of thoughts and ideas, moving progressively into their impact on one’s actions and life.
